Why Does my Chimney Smell?

The most frequent cause of a smelly chimney and the most dangerous is an accumulation of a tar-like sticky substance called creosote, which makes it likely to start chimney fires because of its high combustibility.
Creosote is caused when logs are burned in a fireplace. If you don’t have your chimney cleaned regularly, you risk creosote buildup and a chimney fire.
